vETERANS SUFFERING WITH ADDICTION WHO RECeiVE CARE
2021 was our 20th consecutive year of more than 6,000 veterans dying by suicide, making it the second leading cause of death for veterans under the age 45. When including overdoses and accidental deaths tied to substance use, that number rises to an estimated 44 veteran deaths per day. That’s one suicide every 33 minutes. Behind these numbers is a pattern; untreated addiction and alcoholism are some of the strongest predictors of suicide. Yet, most veterans struggling with substance use disorder never receive timely or effective care.
While the VA provides important services, 62% of veterans do not use the VA at all. For those who do, many face:
- Long waitlists for critical treatment
- Overwhelmed clinics with limited individualized care
- A lack of access to trauma-informed, private treatment programs
- Gaps in ongoing support, including limited access to comprehensive, wraparound, or step-down care
Help Us Build a Path
Recovery For Vets was founded by veterans in recovery who saw firsthand how broken the system can be. Based in Middle Tennessee, we’re a grassroots organization focused on making real, long-term recovery possible for the veterans who need it most.
Access to treatment
We connect veterans to the right level of care, whether inpatient or outpatient, so treatment begins without unnecessary delays.
ongoing support
We ensure veterans have connections to sober housing, therapy, and aftercare programs to maintain long-term recovery.
financial barriers
When cost is a barrier, we work to cover portions of treatment expenses so no one is denied help due to the inability to pay.
